first day

We started today. I made breakfast, we sat at the table as a family of four. For breakfast. Before 7am. If you know me at all, you know that's an amazing feat. I'm not a breakfast or morning person...

Lucas kissed us all goodbye, beaming with excitement for us, telling us to have a good school day. Together.

We cracked a few work books. Did some math. Read a bit. Practiced pencil grips. Did way more than was on my agenda, because - low and behold - learning is fun and they didn't want to stop. Right on. And then we snuggled and read about oak trees and life cycles of trees and went for a walk to the park down the street where we stood next to old oaks and tried to imagine how old they were.

And then we came home, had ice cream cones, watched the Lorax and vegged out. Proud of ourselves for a morning well spent. Where voices were not raised, and the only tears that were shed were over trying to modify a pencil grip {we have since dug out the grippy things, thank you for those, mom!} and that was resolved with a snuggle and a hug and then an "okay, mom. I'm ready to try again."

I'm sure that not every day will go this smoothly. But for a first day, it was all that I had hoped for. And then some.

  1. Yay for good first days! :) I was glad that the only person in our house who cried about school today was THREE. LOL.

  2. Our first day was yesterday, and had its own bumps (seriously, what is it about learning how to grip a pencil?! ... Must acquire the grippy things...) But at the end of the day, my heart felt full and today my kids were all asking to do schoolwork -- be still, my heart! Keep it up, mama!
